    DejaNews lets you search all posts to Usenet, and can give you things like author profiles for a particular poster. Also allows you to post to Usenet.

    The Bandwidth Conservation Society
    BCS is a great source of info on how to most effectively use the resources of the Web. Yes, your pages can be attractive without requiring a T-1 for comfortable browsing! Recommended.

    hacked.net lists its purpose as: "To archive web page attacks and provide easy access to tools, information, news, regarding online security. A resource for the casual surfer and system administrators to safe surf online." Some of the stuff here is quite entertaining.
    Yale Style Manual
    Supposedly covering "Human interface for internet design", this is a rather poorly-designed (in my not-especially-humble opinion) site. But they do have some interesting stuff here.
    adobe.mag
    A "semimonthly web magazine devoted to online and digital publishing." From Adobe.
    clip2gif Home Page
    Clip2Gif is a nice little postcardware program for the Mac that converts between various graphics formats.

    The Java Tutorial, online from the folks at Sun.

    These are the folks that give out all those clever domain names without caring a whit about anything but collecting their annual fees. But this is also the home of all sorts of info on the net, including whois servers, RFCs (Requests For Comments), etc.

    The IETF are the folks who deal with the more technical issues of internet engineering, via a series of working groups.

    ISP/C
    The Internet Service Providers' Consortium, a (new-ish) trade group of ISPs. They've produced a Policy Statement on Spam.
    The Emerging Model of the Internet
    This is an article from the June, 1997, issue of SunWorld Online that is rather interesting, and looks to be planned as the beginning of a series.
    The Organization for Community Networks
    This is a clearinghouse for information on Community Nets and FreeNets. They include a directory of commmunity nets around the world.

    A really useful source for those looking for service in the Chicago area: a complete list of providers with information on each and links to most of them.

      Yahoo is good for searching by category.
      InfoSeek
      Infoseek is another search site, but one that -- for no good reason -- I haven't used much.

      A new search service. Haven't actually used them, so no comment yet.
